The bronze column, weighing almost 4 tons and nearly 17 meters high, constitutes the central element of this installation. This demands new and very different materials, as well as assembly and structural techniques.

In addition, this process was exacerbated by the geometry of this structure which twists and tapers upwards. A spatial projection was formulated by this twisting, so that this object functions expansively without a front or a back.

Additionally, the structural shape of the column had to maintain minimal anchorage in a shallow foundation so that the sensitive substrate around the Old Castle would not be disturbed.

The connections between the lateral, ‘waisted’ elements were stiffened by perforated bronze sheets and welded seams of CuSn10, which were then joined with Vierendeel girders.

A translucent, shimmering body arises through two mounted, stationary, color neutral membranes of ETFE and PVDF and through a third, removable skin.

These membranes, together with the bronze, exhibit an unusual combination of materials.

At night these premium fiber sheets are illuminated from inside, so that an enlivened city landmark defines the place anew.

At the base, the close range effect is created by small slide scanner boxes and a small loud speaker which plays short stories. The bronze material, on the one hand, takes up a clear dialog with the color of the sandstone of the castle façade, but additionally infuses a certain value and permanence into the urban space and emphasizes the sculptural claim of the object.
