City Library, Hungary

The synagogue of Jászberény is a mystical memory from my childhood long gone. In the 60s it was refurbished beyond recognition, more precisely ruined. It became the city library. Later I had the chance to transform and expand this building reminiscent of a shoe box. I tried to restore some of the childhood memory.

Expansion was mostly possible in a vertical sense and little horizontally. The latter became the entrance vestibule with references to the original function. Hence the spatial Star of David that caps its domed roof, whose projection appears on the floor.  The inside of the dome depicts the northern celestial sphere, fourty of the major stars are lit by fibreglass. The outside resembles a helmet of scales. Its material - as are the edges of the spacial Star of David - is brass.

Vertical expansion meant that the building, formerly degraded to flat roofed, received a curved, copper clad roof contributing to usable floor space. The arris has a pair of skylight strips with slightly slanted roof, that is also of copper cladding. The arch is broken by French balconies. Drains are also of copper.

One of the once existent onion domed stair towers was reconstructed with similar function. The other was replaced with an observatory in a hemisphere designed with a classical slit for the telescope. Stargazing became mostly popular among children. Both towers are clad with copper.

This remodelling is a compliment to the most beautiful building of my childhood. In other words a late lament.
