Copper Dome, UK

The distinctive copper clad dome to a studio annexe of a Thames-side house creates a new landmark on the approach to central Oxford. Acting as a focal point within its surroundings of gardens and parking areas the studio, designed by Adrian James Architects, provides flexible domestic space and acts as a ‘gatehouse’ for the adjacent house.

Ground floor brickwork contrasts with the lily-pod shaped copper dome above and is separated by a shadow gap generated by the ring-beam web.

The adjacent house built some years ago also features copper roofs which have been changing in colour over time. Today, pre- and post-patination techniques are available to provide straightaway copper’s distinctive green patina which otherwise takes several years to develop in the environment. These were used for the studio to match the eventual appearance of the house roofs.

The copper is installed on a ply substrate over a series of curved, finger-jointed rafters which support a smaller ring beam around the ‘oculus’ rooflight. Detailing was agreed with the installers to achieve a clean, unfussy finish for all dome, dormer and gutter details, and hips use standing seams to give a crisp edge.
