The care house was designed to create a calming environment for the children by linking it with the landscape and each of the areas of the house are designed around landscaped courtyards with the main living and dining space having direct links to these to provide a flow from internal to external space.

The house is located within a conservation area and has been designed to address its strategic location at the centre of the village. Traditional materials were chosen for the building to enable it to harmonize with the surrounding buildings and blend into the landscape; however these were used with modern detailing to create a contemporary feel to the project. Sandstone, stacked stone and timber were used for the facades whilst copper was chosen for the roofs due to its warm tones and appearance as well as its ability to adapt to the complex roof shapes and junctions.

The front elevation bays are curved to address the street frontage however due to a steep level difference across the site the building itself is located at a lower level than the adjacent pavement therefore the roofscape became a prominent feature on the eyeline of pedestrians. The use of copper allowed the roofs to be kept to a low profile which prevents these becoming too imposing and in addition the curved bays to the street frontage were formed with kite-shaped roofs, this assisted in reducing the overall massing of the building and prevented it becoming domineering, allowing it to blend with its site context and local landscape.
