The new indoor swimming pool in Kantrida is part of a re-qualification design of a beautiful area of Rijeka which includes an existing 50m. outdoor pool and is overlooking the sea.
The re-qualification design included the arrangement of the seaside with leisure facilities, the realization of a marina and an Hotel and a promenade, restaurants and meeting places.
In the design of the new Olympic swimming pool a cutting edge swimming centre was studied, giving Rijeka one of the most advanced and sophisticated facilities in Europe that will satisfy the needs of the local swim team and will allow the city to bid for the most important swimming competitions and at the same time become a focal point for the local community. The facility had to reconnect the seaside to the city.
The final challenge was to integrate the new building into the beautiful green landscape of the area. A series of stairs and ramps will allow the people to descend directly from the main street to the central area in front of the main entrance. These stairs should become a promenade surrounded by the existing trees leading people to discover and enjoy the new facility and the sea.
The main access atrium is glazed so as to provide direct views of the sea and of the two main 50 m. pools from the main exterior piazza. A series of interconnecting terraces made of local stone will create a new “natural artificial” landscape, connecting the sea to the facility and making the shore easily accessible to users.
