About Stad en Sanba
The Stad en Sanba project consists of a unified dual unit on an exclusive location in the bend of the River Scheldt in Antwerp. Just like other unforgettable duos, the project sets itself apart by its unique and differentiated character at an extremely special location.
The building complex Stad en Sanba is located in Antwerp, in the block defined by the Rijnkaai, the Braziliestraat, the Montevideostraat and the Amsterdamstraat, in the outer bend of the River Scheldt. These characteristics represent a special, high-quality location in the former harbour area.
The complex consists of a renovated historic storage depot and the new-build residential building, which is elegant and generously-sized. Both buildings share a common underground parking garage.
The Sanba storage depot is a typical design of storage depot that runs through the block and has two identical façades on the Rijnkaai and on the Braziliestraat. The deep floors with their sober concrete structure are reflected around the main enclosed courtyard, with authentic stairs and a footbridge that opens up the entire building. The storage depot once served as storage space for the Red Star Line and has functioned, up to its present state, as office and storage space for the maritime sector. The Sanba part of the building has been renovated in such a way as to retain as much of the integrity of the storage depot’s original identity as possible. A new 2-floor penthouse will be added on the Scheldt side. The penthouse is designed from an own sculptural identity, its copper siding contrasting with the storage depot and forming the literal crowning jewel.
The Stad part is a new apartment building, located on the Rijnkaai side. The building is characterised by the long 15-metre façade, which has an open relationship with the Scheldt and its beautiful bend. Its interior borders on a spacious, green inner courtyard. Each floor houses a single generously-sized residence that is oriented towards both the Scheldt and the green inner courtyard. Except for a single column, the residences share no structural details, which gives them the flexibility to make the individual wishes of residents possible. The characteristic creation of the façade searches for a balance between the spectacular surroundings and the intimacy that goes hand-in-hand with living there. Subtle shifts in the façade’s surface indicate the scale of a home within the entire building. Implanted along these shifts, the window openings become greater in size the higher up they are, from an intimate living space on the first floor to a one-on-one relationship with the River Scheldt on the uppermost floors. Every residence is provided with a spacious terrace and an open floor plan.
