The figurehead of Amsterdam, clad in pre-patinated copper.
Renzo Piano drew the first outline sketches for the New Metropolis in a Genoveese café in 1990. The building is now a part of the harbour, but not of the city, according to Piano. The tall north facing façade of the building is clad in ‘green’ pre-patinated copper, leading one to think of a ship at its mooring. The IJ tunnel drops down, below ground as the building starts to rise, providing a 'reflection'. When approached, or viewed, from the water, the New Metropolis (NEMO) takes on the role of a figurehead for the city.
