The Orangery: extension to a historical mansion in Huizen, the Netherlands

Commissioned by SAS Institute Inc., Braaksma & Roos Architectural Office developed a plan for their headquarters in The Netherlands. SAS (formerly known as "Statistical Analysis System”) is seated in a historical Mansion in Huizen. When the company approached Braaksma & Roos, the Mansion had an extension wing in decay that dated from the early 1960’s.

The essence of the concept lies in replacing this extension by a contemporary interpretation of a traditional outhouse: the Orangery. Meant to be an intelligible addition to the historical context of the mansion, whilst at the same time it defines itself as a technically modern building.

An antithesis was found between old and new:
The Old Mansion is mainly built in white plaster, glass is the collateral material, whereas the New Orangery is mainly built in glass, here secondary internal elements are carried out as white plastered boxes. The entire roof is covered in copper, same as the bays of the Mansion. Pre-patinated copper perforated screens are used in front of doors and on east elevation.

Because of the glassed facade and because the Orangery stands out from the main Mansion, the surrounding scenery "washes" through its space. To further diffuse the transition from interior to exterior the interior stone floor continues in the exterior to follow the outline of the roofs projection. A wooden field is lain around this stone floor, given more width on the South side, as a fine terrace.

The main function of the Orangery on the ground floor is "Meet & Greet", mainly thought of in the lunchroom area; furthermore a separate interior and exterior Auditorium and a lecture room are situated here. The first floor accommodates 2 free flow offices as well as office cells for conclusion. Secondary spaces are situated in the white boxes. Above these boxes, situated on the north side, the copper roof is lifted like a bonnet, to house the air exhaust.
