The new Patient Treatment Centre at the Christie is home to the largest early clinical trials unit in the world, an expanded chemotherapy department and a new private patients unit. The facility opened ahead of schedule before Christmas 2010, and has been designed to achieve a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.
The proposed design aims to create a stunning and vibrant contemporary building which respects and responds to it’s site context, whilst having minimal impact on the environment. The palette of natural materials was chosen to harmonise with existing buildings- whilst creating interesting and finely crafted elevations- and taking into account all environmental considerations.
Brass is a beautiful natural material, with a natural patina which weathers and varies over time. This gives a natural depth and vibrancy to the building facades, and creates attractive, warm and welcoming building elevations. The shingle system used creates further pattern and articulation at a smaller and more human scale. It is low maintenance, and entirely recyclable, making it an environmentally sustainable solution for now and the future.
The natural textural finish and rich, warm tones of the cladding were chosen to blend in with the brick and terracotta cladding on adjacent buildings, and create a unique and beautiful façade. The brass is expressed as a continuous ribbon wrapping over and around the glazing, creating a soft, undulating and dynamic form. This is juxtaposed with the angular box forming the Northwest elevation, which provides a pleasing contrast to the more sinuous building elements.
