Since the congregations of the main religions are decreasing quickly many empty churches have been torn down or restructured. That’s the reason why every architect can consider himself very lucky if he has the opportunity to build a new church.
The previous church of Obersalbach fell victim to underground coal mining. Now the new church is the centre of the village.
A special idea is the foundation of the building’s shape: the intersection of a traditional crossing-church is separated as an own building. The result is a cube with a centrally located altar inside. The Church is oriented to the east. In this case the entrance is located behind the altar. The positive effect of this position is that the whole congregation welcomes all visitors of the church.
The monolithic construction of the building is made of burnt brick in a light brown to red colour which communicates with the neighbourhood. The structure of the cross-barrel vault is made of wood with an outside cladding of copper in standing seam technique. Every single copper sheet is trapezoidally shaped for better fitting. The roof‘s green pre-patinated surface has made the church a landmark.
All surfaces of the bricks, the wooden furniture and gallery and the white painted vault produce a comfortable and tranquil atmosphere inside the church. Highlights are the colourful windows as well which are designed by the English artist Brian Clarke.
