Restoration of the ruins of Santa Maria Church (Cazorla, Spain)
Intervention in the Santa Maria Church in Cazorla represents a clear commitment to retrieving the ruins of this unfinished temple, both for contemplation purposes and the use of the space for cultural activities in keeping with its heritage values.
The idea behind this project is to combine conservation of the monument with its use, in a reciprocal way following national and international guidelines, and recommendations on cultural heritage and sustainable development.
The following actions are planned:
- Physical restoration of structures
- Improved habitability and use of spaces
- Preparation of a cultural visit to endeavour quality contemplation of the ruins
- Provision of removable equipment for the holding of events: music, theatre and dance
The use of copper
The coffered vault of carved stone is the leading feature of the church ruins. Following its structural consolidation, the vault is covered with copper sheet 0.6mm thick. The base is a 16mm plywood board supported by wooden battens measuring 40x40mm. Integration into the landscape of Cazorla, a place defined by the river Cerezuelo and the Peña de los Halcones crag, is based on the warm colour copper acquires following oxidation. Seamless integration is achieved through the tight curve to the vault lending a balanced composition with the pitched roofs of the area.
