A £11.5m Refurbishment of 1960’s Student Union building. The ‘active frontage’ to the new plaza (of the student union redevelopment) is important to the campus masterplan. It provides a new identity for the Students Union – a high quality destination.
Why Copper?
- A key element of the frontage was the soffit to the new triangular oversailing roof, where a high quality finish and material were required
- We investigated options and decided that copper gave the requisite quality and feel
The Structure
- The grid pattern was based on the structural logic of the existing concrete waffle slab
- The grid generated the location of the clerestory where the glazing meets the ceiling so that the envelope line is hard to distinguish and the integrity of the overall shape of the roof maintained
The Detail
- The copper has been left untreated to weather differently inside and out
- The copper was bent off-site into triangular shapes
- Triangle dimensions based on standard roll sizes to minimise wastage
- Off cuts were used to clad ‘shadow gap’ reveals between panels
