Richard Ewen Architects based in Cuckfield, West Sussex with a large clientele in the Twickenham and Richmond area of SW London was given a unique opportunity by Mr and Mrs Andrew Erritt to design a kitchen extension and roof conversion that would complement their detached 1980’s house in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
REA encouraged the client to consider the use of copper as a suitable covering and finish to a shallow pitched roof forming the kitchen extension, together with razor sharp edged profiles to the new dormer windows within the roof space.
The photographs and drawings of the completed project clearly illustrate the versatile use of copper sheeting in this unique rural setting, forming an appropriate finish to a new orangery styled roof to the kitchen extension, together with copper cheeks, eaves and roof fascias to the dormer windows.
REA used copper because it is the most appropriate and versatile material for a shallow pitched roof providing a light weight covering with a colouring to match the existing clay tiles of the house. In addition, REA also choose to use a copper sheet finish for its low maintenance qualities, especially when detailing the 6 No. high level dormer windows, to this roof conversion completed in March 2011.
